I know mothers and have heard many mothers talk about feeling less attractive after they have children. They don’t really feel beautiful, even though others think they are, and this may be because of how subjective beauty is.
Everyone has their own definition of what beautiful means and looks like, and to me, beauty is more of a feeling than a standard, because when you feel beautiful, you tend to exude a certain aura that makes you feel more attractive.
So really, the key to feeling beautiful again is feeling good and confident in your own skin, but how do you do this when you feel like you never have time to spend on yourself?
Even though motherhood doesn’t offer a lot of “me” time, especially with newborns, there are still a few realistic ways to help you feel more beautiful.
#1: Dress up.
Dressing up helps set the mood for the day and boosts your confidence. To keep it simple and realistic, pick clothing pieces that are easy to wear, such as dresses, jumpers, two-piece outfits and matching coordinate sets. They’ll save you time, since you don’t have to think about assembling an outfit together.
#2: Care for your skin.
Not getting enough sleep can age your skin and cause acne, dryness, and dullness, so having a skincare routine can help your skin feel healthier. Of course, this doesn’t mean you need a lot of products. Just a few is ok, but the most important skincare product to have is a good sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. It doesn’t take too much time to put on and can easily be applied during the morning and night.
#3: Love all of you, even when you’re naked.
We’ve all had some sort of insecurity about our body. Though it’s normal, don’t let it consume you and pick yourself apart. Learn to love every inch of you from head to toe with all your flaws. With or without makeup. With or without clothes. Appreciating your nakedness is appreciating all you are already without the need for accessories, because part of feeling beautiful is feeling comfortable being in your own skin.
It may help to start with:
Talking to someone about it, particularly your partner or a professional.
Changing your perspective on what being beautiful is.
Accepting that being imperfect and different is ok.
Getting used to being bare-faced and bare-naked.
Glamming up for yourself, not for others.
#4: Compliment yourself.
There are many reasons why you should compliment yourself, but the most important reason is it will make you feel better and more confident, because it encourages you to embrace who you are and love yourself despite the flaws you have. These compliments can be about what you like about yourself or something you are proud of doing. If you want, you can write positive affirmations on a sticky note as a reminder to yourself.
Key Takeaway
Learning to feel more beautiful is a process. It can take some time, and like everything in life, expect there to be ups and downs. Some days you’ll feel good. Other days you won’t, and that’s okay. Life’s funny like that. You might not always feel beautiful in the moment but remembering what you love about yourself and remembering to love yourself can help you get there.
