Today’s a special day for anyone who loves cleaning, organizing or starting fresh with the new year, because it’s #CleanOffYourDeskDay—the perfect way to start the new year on a good foot.
No, I’m not talking about your office desk, though you could do that too. I’m talking about your makeup vanity, aka your beauty trove, but don’t worry if you don’t have a vanity.
You can still follow these 6 easy steps to keep your beauty and makeup space clean.
Step 1: Lay out all your beauty products.
You can do this anywhere there’s enough space to see all your items. I usually like to do this on the floor.
Step 2: Organize your products into categories.
You can categorize it however you like, but if you’re having trouble you can start with categorizing your products by type: hair products, makeup products, skincare products, miscellaneous things that shouldn’t be with your makeup.
Step 3: Sort which products you want to keep.
Now that your beauty products are categorized, you can easily go through each category and take away the products you don’t want to keep.
Make sure to place the items you don’t want to keep in a trash bag for easy disposal or in a storage container if there are products you want to give away.
If you’re having a difficult time figuring out what beauty products to keep and part with, here are a few suggestions.
What beauty products should you keep?
Products you love and constantly repurchase or use daily.
Unopened products you know you are going to use within the month.
What beauty products should you throw away?
Products you don’t like anymore.
Products you have not used in 3-6 months.
Products that are empty.
Opened products that are expired. (Some products may have a number with an -m on it.)
Step 4: Clean, clean, clean.
Clean your vanity inside and out.
Spray the tabletop down with cleaning spray or wipe it down with disinfecting wipes.
Sweep the inside of drawers for any debris.
Clean your beauty products.
Wipe any mirrors.
Wipe down the surface of your products.
Wash your brushes and beauty sponges.
Clean any makeup organizers or containers you use to store your makeup.
Wipe it down with wet wipes (e.g. makeup wipes, disinfecting wipes).
Wash it with a little bit of dish soap and rinse it off.
Apply plastic polish to acrylic organizers for shine or scratches (i.e. Novus Plastic Polish).
Step 5: Organize your beauty products.
If you found anything that didn’t belong with your makeup, find a proper place for it. Everything that does belong should also be given a proper home it goes to after it’s used. This will help keep products more organized over time.
Step 6: Get rid of the beauty products you no longer want.
If you have products that are still in good condition or has not been opened, you don’t have to throw it away. Instead, you can:
Sell beauty products online (e.g. Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Mecari)
Give beauty products away to family and friends.
Donate beauty products to local women’s shelter or online organizations.
