January is all about New Year’s resolutions, making it an exciting or stressful month, because a new year means new goals and aspirations, but have you stopped any time this month to appreciate others with a simple compliment or even yourself?
If you haven’t, now’s your chance, because it’s National Compliment Day. This annual event has taken place on Jan. 24 since 1998. The founders, Kathy Chamberlin and Debby Hoffman, created this event to promote positivity and human connection.
Although #NationalComplimentDay is mostly known for giving compliments, you should also remember to appreciate and compliment yourself.
Don’t know why you should?
Here are 5 reasons why you should give yourself a compliment.
Reason #1: Boosts your self-esteem.
Complimenting yourself is a way of loving yourself, because it teaches you how to talk to yourself positively instead of degrading or comparing yourself to others.
Reason #2: Improves your self-confidence.
Believing you can do something helps you tackle challenges that come along your way and helps you push through any fears you may have. Complimenting one thing you know will help you when facing a challenge or fear can help you feel more assured of your capabilities.
Reason #3: Makes you feel more positive.
Even a simple compliment can change a person’s day and make them happier. When you compliment yourself, you create a similar effect, because you change your mindset to be more optimistic and positive about yourself and the future.
Reason #4: Creates a less stressful environment.
Sometimes, we can be too harsh on ourselves and forget to take a step back and appreciate how much we have accomplished, so complimenting ourselves for doing something can help remind us we’ve worked hard and need to learn how to give ourselves a break.
Reason #5: Helps motivate you.
When you feel like giving up, a simple compliment can help encourage you to push on and continue to try your best, even if you need a short break. In a way, it’s similar to giving yourself a pep talk.
Regardless of where you are with your New Year’s resolution, remember to take time to appreciate yourself with a compliment and treat yourself with lots of love. A quick check-in with yourself of how you’re doing is a great way to make sure you’re treating yourself the best you can for 2019.
